The creators of the coffee passport purposefully misguided cafes into signing up. There is no benefit to the cafes to sign on to the coffee passport. Coffee shops do NOT profit off of this passport AT ALL. They just use the passport, get their free coffee, and then buy another passport. ALL OF THE MONEY GOES TO THE PASSPORT SELLERS. Most of the cafes on this passport won’t be on the next one simply because they’ve realized it’s a scam. Every shop I’ve spoken to on the passport has expressed how awful the passport deal has been for them.
As for the type of people that buy these; most of them are very nice. However, the few that are not are very entitled individuals that want to sub out espresso lattes for matcha or regular syrups for more expensive seasonal ones. Rather than be understanding, considering they’re already getting a FREE/DISCOUNTED drink, they act extraordinarily entitled, upset, and will even try to argue against management (with no success, clearly). The people who buy these passports seem to be under the impression that the shops are getting some kind of “cut” of these passports. THEY ARE NOT. Something the passport people should make very clear on future passports is the graciousness these cafes have to give them these discounts for nothing in return.
Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective. We want to respectfully clarify a few points, as transparency with both cafe partners and customers is extremely important to us.
We do not mislead cafes into participating. Every participating cafe is given a clear, upfront explanation of how the passport works and the fact that participation is voluntary. There is no obligation for any cafe to join or continue in future editions.
In our direct conversations with cafe owners and managers, the feedback we receive is very different from what’s described here. Cafes have reached out wanting to participate again because they value the exposure to new customers, increased foot traffic, and the opportunity to convert first time visitors into regulars. That repeat participation is something we’re grateful for and take seriously.
We also make it clear to passport holders that each cafe sets its own drink parameters and policies. We fully support cafes in enforcing those boundaries and do not condone entitled or disrespectful behavior toward staff. If a cafe ever experiences an issue, we encourage them to contact us directly so we can address it.
We appreciate all feedback and remain committed to being transparent, respectful, and supportive of the cafes that make this project possible.
I've enjoyed visiting new coffee shops! I am sad that my 6 months is almost up and I only have a few left to visit, but I'll be back to several of them! Unlike another review reported, I have found the baristas to be very friendly and engaging when I bring out the passport, even though it's not a regular sale for them. I ask them questions about their favorite drinks, and always leave a good tip because they're doing the same work as they would be if I was paying directly for the drink.
The coffee shops on this list have notbeen good and have had poor customer service. The workers see the passport and then you get treated poorly with bad service. Or they make you explain the passport and one place even said they didn’t take the passport but then did. Just so awkward to use.
It has been a great experience and gotten me out to some new coffee shops that I wasn't even aware of and will now enjoy going back to visit.
Ordered it and love the idea, the expiration stamps are all different and wrong at that, i get maybe 5 months- and they’re messy too. the one pictured is neat but very off, most pages have 5+ stamps on top of each other with no clear expiration. just could’ve been done more thoughtfully and carefully for what people receive. getting an entire 1/6th of my time with the passport cut off is disappointing
